Ottawa Junk Desk Start a work order

Tell us what has to go. A local hauler calls with a price.

Couches, mattresses, a dead fridge, a garage full of boxes, a gutted bathroom. Write it down in one work order and we pass it to one independent Ottawa hauler, who calls you to price the load.

What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Which share of your truck do you think my pile fills, and what does that share cost?
  2. Q2What is your minimum charge, and does a mattress or appliance fee come on top of it?
  3. Q3Is HST in the price you quote me?
  4. Q4Can you carry from the basement or the second floor, and does that add to the price?
  5. Q5Do you take renovation debris in the same load, or is it priced on its own?

Before the visit

  • Two or three phone photos of the pile from different sides.
  • A list of the large pieces: sofas, mattresses, appliances, exercise machines, hot tub.
  • Where the truck can stop, and how far that is from the pile.
  • Paint cans, propane tanks and batteries set apart, with a count.
  • Anything that stays, moved out of the way or marked.

Where the City stops and a hauler starts

City curbside collection takes 3 garbage items every two weeks. A bag, a 140-litre bin under 15 kg, or one bulky item such as a sofa each counts as one. Extra garbage goes out in a City yellow bag, and furniture cannot be bagged. Two kinds of waste never go to the curb at all: household appliances (fridges, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, hot water tanks) and construction or renovation waste (drywall, plaster, wood, tile, brick, windows, shingles, insulation).

So the request usually lands here when the pile is bigger than three items, when it holds an appliance or renovation debris, or when it has to be gone before the next collection day.

Five kinds of job

Pick the one closest to yours in the work order. One line of detail is enough.

  • Junk removal. Furniture, boxes, a garage or basement clear-out, an estate clean-out.
  • Mattress disposal. One mattress or a whole set with box springs and frames. See mattress disposal.
  • Bin rental. A roll-off bin dropped at your place for a week of filling. See bin rental or junk pickup.
  • Renovation debris. Drywall, flooring, cabinets, a tear-out from a bathroom or kitchen.
  • Appliance pickup. Fridges, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, air conditioners.

What Ottawa haulers charge

Ottawa haulers that publish prices charge by the share of the truck your load fills. One firm publishes fifths: $269 for a few items, $399 for a small room, $579 for a garage or basement, $639 for a large clean-out and $699 for a full truck, all plus tax, with a $129 minimum. Another lists quarters from $265 to $695 for a full load, with minimum pickups from $175. The cost guide puts these lists side by side and shows what adds to them.

Items that change the quote

Some things cost more to get rid of than their size suggests. One Ottawa price list charges $10 a paint can, $15–20 a propane tank, $15 a tire and $30–50 for an appliance with refrigerant. The City says the refrigerant in fridges, freezers and air conditioners has to be removed by a dealer before disposal. The City landfill refuses asbestos, liquids and hazardous waste, so mention old insulation or chemicals up front. Name these items in the request so the price on the call covers them.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Junk Desk is a request service. We take your work order and pass it to one independent local hauling company. That company calls you, sets the price and does the job.

Questions

01Will the City pick up my old fridge or stove?

The City does not collect household appliances at the curb: stoves, fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dryers, dishwashers and hot water tanks are all on its list. Pick Appliance pickup in the work order and a hauler quotes the removal.

02I only have one couch. Is that worth a truck?

A couch counts as one of the 3 garbage items the City takes every two weeks, so the curb works if you have room in your count. For a hauler, expect the minimum charge: $129 on one Ottawa list, from $175 on another.

03Can a hauler take drywall, tile and old cabinets?

Ottawa haulers and bin companies take it, and heavy, dense material is often priced apart from household junk. The City never collects construction and demolition waste at the curb. Pick Renovation debris in the work order and say roughly how much there is.

04How do I know the price before the truck comes?

Send photos with the work order. The company that calls can give a price range from them, and confirms the final number once the crew sees the pile.

05How many companies get my request?

One. If that company cannot take the job, we ask you before passing it to another.
