What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Is a single mattress your minimum charge, or the minimum plus a mattress fee?
  2. Q2Do you charge the same for a box spring as for a mattress?
  3. Q3Can you take the bed frame and headboard on the same trip?
  4. Q4Where does the mattress go after pickup: a recycler or the landfill?
  5. Q5If there are bed bugs, how does your crew wrap and carry the mattress?

Before the visit

  • The count and sizes: twin, double, queen or king, and how many box springs.
  • Which floor, and whether the stairs have a tight turn at the top or bottom.
  • Strip the bedding and take the frame apart if you can do it with a screwdriver.
  • For a condo, the service elevator booking and where the truck can stop.
  • Say if there are bed bugs, so the crew comes ready.

A mattress and the City count

Ottawa collects 3 garbage items per household every two weeks. A mattress is a bulky item under the City’s by-law, and it counts as one of the three. A box spring is a second. Neither can be put in a yellow bag, so the yellow-bag route for extra garbage does not cover them.

A hauler fits when:

  • the bed set plus your regular bags is more than three items,
  • there are several beds, after a move-out, an estate or a kid leaving home,
  • the mattress is on an upper floor or in a basement and nobody can carry it down,
  • it has to be gone before the next collection day.

What the pickup costs

A single mattress is priced as a small share of the truck, and small jobs run into the minimum charge. On published Ottawa lists the minimum is $129 at one firm and from $175 at another. The first firm adds a $35 disposal fee for each mattress or box spring. Another firm puts 1 to 2 items at $150–250 and 3 to 5 items, such as a couch, a mattress and a dresser, at $300–450.

Two beds cost less per piece when they leave on one truck. Put everything that goes into the same request: frames, headboards, the old dresser, the boxes the new set came in.

Sizes, frames and stairs

Tell the company the size of each mattress. A king and a twin take very different space in a truck and on a staircase. Metal frames and slatted bases come apart with a screwdriver or an Allen key, and a frame in pieces carries faster.

Stairs are where the time goes. A mattress folded around a tight landing needs two people, so say how the stairs turn and how wide the top hall is.

Bed bugs

Ottawa Public Health notes that bed bugs hide in the seams of mattresses and box springs, in bed frames and headboards. If a mattress is going because of bed bugs, say so in the request. The company can then plan how its crew wraps the mattress and carries it out of the house.

Who you are dealing with

Ottawa Junk Desk passes your request to one independent local hauling company. That company calls, confirms the count and the price, and does the pickup.

Questions

01Can I put a mattress out with the garbage in Ottawa?

Yes, as one of your 3 garbage items for that collection. The City’s by-law lists mattresses as bulky items. A box spring counts as another item, and neither can be put in a yellow bag, so a full bed set can use up a household’s count.

02What does mattress pickup cost in Ottawa?

One mattress usually comes in at the hauler’s minimum: $129 on one Ottawa firm’s list and from $175 on another. One firm also lists a $35 disposal fee per mattress or box spring. More pieces move you into a bigger share of the truck.

03My mattress had bed bugs. Will a hauler still take it?

Write it in the work order. Ottawa Public Health notes that bed bugs hide in the seams of mattresses, box springs and bed frames, so the crew needs to know before it carries them through your home.

04Can the hauler take the old one when the new one arrives?

Write your delivery date in the request and choose This week or Flexible. The company tells you on the call which days it can come.

05Do you take futons and sofa beds too?

Put them in the same request. A sofa bed is heavy and has a metal frame inside, so mention it by name.
