In short
- From downtown, Kanata is roughly 22 km out the 417, on the far side of the Greenbelt.
- Beaverbrook and Glen Cairn are the oldest neighbourhoods, with Beaverbrook's first street from 1964; Bridlewood is still building.
- Ottawa haulers' published lists show one city-wide price: $129–175 minimum, $695–699 for a full truck on two lists.
- Homes built before 1990 may hold asbestos in insulation, and the City landfill refuses asbestos.

Kanata from a hauler’s seat
Kanata lies past the NCC Greenbelt, about 22 km along the 417 from downtown. It was its own city from 1978 until amalgamation in 2001. Highway 417 runs through the middle of it, with the Kanata North Business Park on one side and the Kanata South Business Park on the other.
For a hauler, the street and the nearest main road set the route. Put your postal code in the request, or name the road closest to you.
The City lists two private disposal sites west of Kanata, on Carp Road and Westhunt Drive in Carp, and its own landfill, the Trail Waste Facility, is at 4475 Trail Road. Where a load goes after pickup is the hauler’s call.
Three generations of houses
Bill Teron planned Kanata in the 1960s with a mix of densities, and Tiffany Crescent, its first street, opened in 1964. The oldest parts are Glen Cairn and Beaverbrook; Bridlewood still has crews building.
What that means for a junk job:
- 1960s and 70s houses. The first went up in the mid-1960s, and a renovation in one can tear out original insulation, plaster and flooring. Health Canada notes asbestos was used mainly to insulate homes before 1990. If the debris includes those materials, say so in the request. The City landfill refuses asbestos, and one Ottawa bin company rents a separate covered bin for it.
- Townhomes and stacked townhomes, clustered on the east side of Kanata Town Centre. Loads come down stairs, and a bin may have nowhere to sit. A pickup crew suits these.
- Detached houses, more common farther west toward Terry Fox Drive. Send photos of the garage and the basement. If the driveway can hold a roll-off bin, measure it first.
Bin or truck on a Kanata street
Kept wholly on your driveway, a bin needs no City permit. Once it touches the road, the boulevard or the sidewalk, it falls under a Temporary Construction-related Encroachment permit: $101 for a simple one in 2026, a daily road charge from $41, and a lead time of ten business days or longer. Townhouse complexes and condo corporations set their own rules for bins, so ask the property manager. The bin rental or junk pickup guide compares the two.
Same City rules as the rest of Ottawa
Kanata curbs follow the city-wide limit of three garbage items per biweekly pickup, and appliances or renovation waste are refused at any curb. A pile past that limit, or one that holds either, is hauler work. The minimum on Ottawa price lists sits between $129 and $175, and a full truck between $695 and $699. See the cost guide for the fractions in between.
Common Kanata jobs
The housing mix points to a few repeat jobs. A garage cleanout in a detached house is a typical full-truck candidate. A finished or half-finished basement cleanout often holds old appliances, and the appliance removal page explains why the City does not collect those. A kitchen or bathroom update produces renovation debris. Neighbours in Stittsville and Barrhaven send the same kinds of requests, with their own housing and distances.
Who you are dealing with
Kanata requests go to one independent hauling firm that covers the west suburbs. Its own staff call you, price the pile and load the truck. This desk forwards the form and stays out of the pricing.
Questions to ask the company
- Does Kanata North or Bridlewood carry any travel charge on your list?
- My house dates from the 1960s or 70s. How do you handle old insulation, plaster or flooring?
- For a stacked townhome, can your crew carry down two flights?
- Can you price the garage and the basement as one load or two?
- If I need a bin instead, will it fit on my driveway without touching the boulevard?
Have this ready for the call
- The postal code, or the big road you turn off: Eagleson, Hazeldean, Terry Fox, March or Campeau.
- The year the house was built, if the load includes renovation debris.
- In a stacked town or condo, the unit, the door code and the spot where a truck may pull in.
- Photos of the garage and basement, door open, lights on.
- Driveway length and width, if you are thinking of a bin.
Questions people ask
Does a Kanata address cost more for junk removal?
Each Ottawa list we opened prints a single city rate, and none names Kanata separately. A distance charge is each firm’s own policy, so ask on the call.
We are renovating a 1970s house in Beaverbrook. Can the debris go in the same load?
Usually, as renovation debris priced apart from furniture. If the work disturbs old insulation, plaster or flooring, say so first: Health Canada notes asbestos was used to insulate homes before 1990, and the City landfill refuses asbestos.
I live in a stacked townhome. How does the crew get things out?
Write which floor, how the stairs turn and where the truck can stop. Stairs and long carries add time, and one Ottawa hauler lists stairs or narrow halls at +$50.
Can I have a bin on the street in front of my house in Kanata?
The road needs a City Temporary Construction-related Encroachment permit, which in 2026 starts at $101 plus a daily road charge of $41 or more, with ten business days or more to issue. Your own driveway needs none of that.
Do you cover Stittsville and Kanata North too?
Write your postal code. We pass the request to one hauler that covers it.
