The piano, the half-empty oil drum, the box of old cleaners: put the odd pieces on the list with the sofa. The independent Ottawa company that gets it says on the call what goes on the truck, what costs extra and what stays.

What the hauler sites say they take

Read together, Ottawa hauler pages describe a common core. Residential jobs include furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpeting, electronics, tires, pianos and hot tubs. Commercial jobs add office furniture, cubicles, filing cabinets and monitors. Construction jobs include flooring, shingles, scrap wood, drywall, concrete, yard waste and scrap metal. One firm sums up its limit in a line: if it is in the way and not hazardous, it will dispose of it.

That list is a starting point. The call settles it, because each company sets its own limits and changes them. The sections below follow the order in which a crew thinks about a pile: the routine pieces, the pieces that need extra handling, the pieces that need an official route.

Routine pieces

Sofas, chairs, dressers, beds, desks, shelves, boxed household goods and loose bags go into the truck at the load price. Furniture removal and the garage and basement cleanout pages show how those loads are sized. Mattresses and box springs are accepted with a per-piece fee, set out on the mattress disposal page.

Pieces that carry a fee or a quote

A few things are expensive to get rid of for their size, so lists bill them per piece. Paint is $5 or $10 a can, a propane tank $15–$25, a tire $10–$25 and an appliance with refrigerant $30–$50. The full table is on the price by item page.

Specialty items are quoted after the crew sees them. One firm names hot tubs and spas, pool tables, treadmills and gym equipment, commercial appliances, concrete, bricks and masonry, and construction debris. A second firm switches a mostly dense load to weight pricing, since a box full of concrete would overload the truck. The City landfill’s 2026 rate of $172.70 a tonne for residential garbage is a useful yardstick for a weighed load. See renovation debris removal for the job itself.

What is on refusal lists

One Ottawa firm lists items it must refuse without a dangerous-goods transport licence. Bio-medical waste, including needles, sharps and blood-soaked items, is prohibited. Asbestos materials are refused unless the crew has specific training and cover for them. Unlabelled chemicals are refused as an explosion or toxic gas risk. Oil tanks and fuel drums are accepted only if empty and cut open. A bin rental from another firm bars hazardous materials, propane tanks, paint and solvents. Crews also keep the right to refuse anything they judge unsafe on the day.

The City handles these through its own routes. Household hazardous waste, batteries, e-bike batteries and ammunition each have a different one, set out on items haulers cannot take.

Usable pieces

Several companies say they sort usable furniture for charity and send metal and electronics to recycling. That claim comes from the firms themselves, and the destination changes by load. Ask where the sofa goes. If it is clean and sound, a charity may collect it directly; see donating furniture in Ottawa.

Who you are dealing with

The yes-or-no on each item belongs to the one independent hauler your list is sent to; the desk has no vote. A refusal on the call is better than a refusal at the door. Send the whole list, including the awkward pieces, and let the company price them.

Questions to ask the company

  1. I have a list of items; which ones would you not take?
  2. Which pieces do you price as specialty or by weight?
  3. Do you take electronics and appliances with refrigerant, and what does each cost?
  4. If a piece turns out to be on your refusal list on the day, what happens to the rest of the load?
  5. Where do the usable pieces and the metal end up?

Have this ready for the call

  • A written list, grouped: furniture, appliances, electronics, debris, yard waste, odd pieces.
  • Photos of anything heavy: a hot tub, a safe, a pool table, a pile of tile.
  • A note of containers with contents: paint, fuel, cleaners, oil, propane.
  • The weight guess for dense material: how many bags or wheelbarrow loads.
  • Any item from a flood, a fire or a pest problem, flagged before the call.

Questions people ask

Will a junk company take old paint cans?

Some do, with a fee. Two Ottawa lists price paint at $5 a can and $10 a can ($25 for a 5-gallon pail). A bin rental from another firm does not allow paint or solvents at all. Ask the company that calls, and set the cans apart so the crew can count them.

Does a hauler take electronics such as TVs and printers?

Several Ottawa firms list e-waste removal among their services, and one says regulated recycling levies are passed through at cost and itemised. The City’s Trail Road landfill rate list shows source-separated electronic waste as free, so a hauler is one of several routes.

Can a crew take a hot tub or a pool table?

Usually. Junk Gods groups hot tubs, pool tables, treadmills and gym equipment as specialty items, each quoted on its own for weight, size or disposal reasons. Expect a photo request and a question about access, stairs and the pad or deck it sits on before a price is named.

Is renovation waste like drywall or tile accepted?

Hauler sites list post-construction debris, flooring, shingles, drywall and concrete as jobs they take. Dense loads can switch to weight pricing. Ask the company whether its debris quote comes with a weight estimate.

What does a crew do with a mattress from a bed bug problem?

Say so before the visit. Ottawa Public Health notes bed bugs hide in the seams of mattresses and box springs, so a company will usually want to know in advance. It may handle the piece differently or decline it, and the answer is the company’s to give.

Do haulers take oil tanks or fuel drums?

One Ottawa firm accepts them only when completely empty and cut open for verification. The City lists oil tanks among items it does not pick up at the curb. Give the company the tank size, how much oil or fuel is left and the condition in your request, so the crew can plan the visit.
