Where Barrhaven sits
Downtown is roughly 17 km north-east of Barrhaven. The Greenbelt marks the north edge, the Rideau River the east, Highway 416 the west, and the Half Moon Bay development along Cambrian Road the south. Nepean governed it until 2001, and the 2021 count put its population at 103,234.
Pick the road nearest you when you write the request: Greenbank, Strandherd, Woodroffe, Jockvale, Fallowfield or Cambrian. A railway line cuts the area diagonally, so two addresses a short distance apart can sit on different sides of the tracks and take different routes.
Townhomes first, a few big houses
Mel Barr began building here in the 1960s on a farm he had planned as a racetrack. Barrhaven Public School opened in 1968-69. Growth picked up after the province overruled a limit on expansion in 1979. The result is a suburb of curved streets where, in the older parts, most blocks are townhouses with some larger houses mixed in.
Neighbourhood names come from developers: Old Barrhaven, Longfields, Davidson Heights, Chapman Mills, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay and Quinn’s Pointe are a few. The younger the streets, the more recent the garages and basements, and the more likely the junk is furniture, boxes and builder leftovers.
For the crew, a townhouse row means one driveway or a shared lot, a short front path and sometimes a side gate. Say so in the request.
What a Barrhaven load looks like
- Garage. A single garage in a townhouse fills with bikes, bins and old shelving. A garage cleanout in a detached house runs larger.
- Basement. A finished or half-finished basement collects sectionals, exercise gear and an old fridge. See basement cleanout.
- Move day. Spare furniture and mattresses go with furniture removal and mattress disposal.
- Flooring. A room of carpet and underlay counts as renovation debris.
Curb limits that push loads to a hauler
A Barrhaven house gets three garbage items per two-week pickup. The City counts one 140-litre bag or can under 15 kg as an item, and one chair or mattress as an item too. Anything past three needs the City’s yellow overflow bags, which a sofa will never fit. Carpet goes out rolled and tied, each bundle at most 1.2 m by 60 cm and 15 kg, and every bundle uses up one of the three. Appliances sit outside curbside service entirely.
Do the arithmetic on a garage: two bulky items and a few bags use up a collection day, and the next one is two weeks away. That gap is when people ask a hauler.
What the numbers look like
Ottawa haulers publish volume prices. One list runs $129 for a minimum, $579 for three-fifths of a truck and $699 for a full one, with $35 extra for a mattress or box spring and $10 per tire. Another gives $300–450 for a half truck of three to five items, and a third starts minimum pickups at $175. The cost guide lays out the fractions.
For comparison, the City landfill charges $172.70 per tonne above 250 kg for household garbage in 2026, and takes scrap metal, e-waste and up to ten tires free. Those figures cover disposal. A hauler’s price adds the lifting and the drive.
Timing in Barrhaven
Spring brings garage clear-outs once the snow leaves the driveway. Give a fixed date in the request.
Who you are dealing with
The form you send for a Barrhaven address goes to a single independent company that covers the south end. Someone from that company calls, checks the photos against the list and gives the price. The desk itself carries nothing. The nearby areas of Nepean and Stittsville get their own pages, with their own housing and distances.
Questions to ask the company
- South of Strandherd, near the 416: is that still your usual zone and your usual rate?
- My townhome has a single-car garage and a narrow side path. Where will the truck park?
- Can you price the garage, the basement and the old carpet as one load?
- Which items carry a separate fee on your list: mattresses, tires, paint?
- Do you sort usable furniture for donation before the rest goes to disposal?
Have this ready for the call
- Your street and neighbourhood name, for example Longfields, Stonebridge, Chapman Mills or Half Moon Bay.
- Photos of the garage, the basement and any pile at the side of the house.
- A note on parking: driveway length, visitor spots, or the street in front of a townhouse row.
- Any carpet, underlay or flooring coming up, with a rough room count.
- Which appliances are on the list, and whether the fridge or freezer still holds food.
Questions people ask
Why do Barrhaven townhomes fill up with boxes after a move?
A move in or out produces cardboard, packing paper and broken-down furniture in one weekend. The City says cardboard belongs in the fibres recycling bin and cannot be used as a garbage container, so a pile of boxes is a recycling job first. The furniture and leftovers are what a hauler loads.
How should old carpet be set out in Barrhaven?
Curbside carpet has to be tied in bundles no longer than 1.2 m, no wider than 60 cm and no heavier than 15 kg, and each bundle counts toward the 3-item limit. A whole room of carpet and underlay is more than that, so it usually goes on a hauler’s truck.
Why does a hauler charge more than the landfill's tonnage fee?
Trail Road’s 2026 household-garbage rate is $172.70 a tonne past the first 250 kg, with $43.20 as the floor, and it turns away commercial garbage, asbestos and liquids. That fee pays for burial alone. A hauler’s quote also covers two people, the carry from your garage, the truck and the sorting.
My builder left scrap in the garage after a finished basement. Who takes it?
Construction material from a homeowner is accepted as residential garbage at the City landfill, while a contractor’s waste is commercial. A hauler can take the scraps with the rest of the garage. Tell the company what the material is, since drywall and wood price differently from bagged waste.
Does the Barrhaven postal code change who picks up my request?
The hauler is picked by address, so a street or postal code tells more than a neighbourhood name. Barrhaven runs from Old Barrhaven near Greenbank Road to Half Moon Bay along Cambrian Road, and the company confirms on the call that it serves yours.
