How a bin is priced

Every bin price in Ottawa has the same four parts: a base for the size, the weight included, a charge for weight over that, and a charge for days beyond the rental period. Some companies add a fuel or environmental percentage, and some charge a fee for each banned item found inside.

The lists below were opened on 29.10.2026 on each company’s own site. The company that takes your call sets its own price, so read these figures as the shape of a quote.

Three lists side by side

Company list Bin Base price Weight included Over the limit
Bin There Dump That 9-yard, 9 x 7 x 4 ft $440 1 tonne $150/tonne, prorated
Bin There Dump That 14-yard, 12 x 8 x 4.5 ft $485 1.5 tonnes $150/tonne
Bin There Dump That 20-yard, 12 x 8 x 6 ft $540 2 tonnes $150/tonne
Bin Rentals Ottawa 14-yard, 12 x 7 x 5 ft $389 1 tonne $140/tonne
Bin Rentals Ottawa 20-yard, 12 x 8 x 5.5 ft $419 1 tonne $140/tonne
Junk That Funk 14-yard, 12 x 8 x 5 ft $300 (1 week), $329 (2 weeks) none, dump fee extra $145/ton, prorated

The first company adds a 17% fuel surcharge to its prices and bills taxes on top. The second and third quote plus HST. The first list adds three terms: a maximum of 4 tonnes per bin, a $100 penalty for each hazardous item or tire found inside, and a rule that the bin is loaded no higher than its wall.

A worked example

Suppose a basement tear-out fills a 14-yard bin and the load weighs 2 tonnes.

  • First list: $485 plus 0.5 tonne at $150, which is $560 before the 17% surcharge and tax.
  • Second list: $389 plus 1 tonne at $140, which is $529 plus HST.
  • Third list: $300 for the week plus 2 tons at $145, which is $590 plus HST.

At 1 tonne the order changes: $485, $389 and $445. Weight decides which list is cheapest, so a guess at the weight belongs in the request. The City landfill’s own residential rate, for scale, is $172.70 a tonne in 2026, and the haulers’ lists fall between $140 and $150.

Check the unit. One list defines a tonne as 1,000 kg (2,204 lb); the page with “ton” does not define it, so ask.

Clean fill and the asbestos bin

Dense, clean material goes into its own small bin. The first company’s 4-yard and 6-yard clean-fill bins, at $410 and $440, take soil, earth, sod, gravel, concrete, rocks and asphalt only, with 4 tonnes of tipping included. They cannot contain wood or garbage. The same company lists a covered 20-yard bin for double-bagged asbestos at $1,200 with 1 tonne included, $675 a tonne after that, plus the 17% surcharge and a 20% industrial waste fee. Asbestos is refused at the City landfill. Mixed reno waste and how a crew prices it are on renovation debris removal.

Permit for a bin on the road

A roll-off bin on the road or in a public laneway needs a City temporary construction-related encroachment permit. The 2026 fees: $101 for a simple permit, $998 for a complex one, and rental of $2.02 per square metre a day on the road or sidewalk ($0.87 on the boulevard) with a $41 daily minimum. Processing takes at least 10 business days, and fees do not come back. A bin fully on your private driveway sits outside the permit. Ask the company who applies; the comparison with a crew is on bin rental or junk pickup.

Reading a quote

Put the quotes in one table before you choose: base price, weight included, price per extra tonne, days, surcharge, penalties and permit. The line most often missing is the weight. A quote without it only tells you the minimum.

A crew can cost less than a bin when the load is light and bulky. The truck-share prices are on prices by truckload, and the full set of cost lines is on junk removal cost in Ottawa. For what a bin cannot hold, read items haulers cannot take.

Who you are dealing with

None of the three companies above is us. Your form goes to one independent operator, which phones to pick the bin size, names its price and drops the bin, or offers a crew if the load suits one better. Ask that operator to fill in the table above with its own numbers.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is the fuel or environmental charge a percentage on top, and does it apply to the weight charge too?
  2. Is your tonne 1,000 kg or a short ton of 2,000 lb?
  3. How many days are included, and what is each extra day?
  4. What is the charge if I fill the bin above the wall height or send up a tire?
  5. Who applies for the City permit if the bin has to stand on the road?

Have this ready for the call

  • Driveway length, width, slope and overhead wires, measured
  • The material and a guess at its weight: drywall, shingles, tile, plaster, concrete
  • A list of anything hazardous or banned in your pile: paint, propane, tires, mattresses, fridges
  • Where your property line sits, and whether the bin could end up on the boulevard
  • Dates: when the bin should arrive and when you will be done filling

Questions people ask

Why do two bins of the same size have such different prices?

The base price covers different things. One Ottawa list includes 1.5 tonnes and adds 17% for fuel; another includes 1 tonne at $389 plus HST; a third sells a week at $300 and bills the dump fee by the ton. Work out the total at the weight you expect; the headline number hides the difference.

How much does a bin cost if my load is heavy?

Take the base price and add the weight over the included tonnes. On the lists above that is $140 to $150 a tonne, and $145 a ton on a third. For 2 tonnes in a 14-yard bin the base prices work out to $560, $529 and $590 before surcharges and tax.

What is the penalty for a banned item in the bin?

One Ottawa company charges $100 for each hazardous item or tire found in the bin and refuses mattresses, box springs, fridges and freezers. Another refuses hazardous material, propane tanks and paint. Take banned items out of the bin loading plan before the first load.

What is a clean-fill bin?

A small bin, 4 or 6 yards, that takes only clean soil, gravel, rock and concrete, with no wood or garbage. One Ottawa company lists it at $410 for 4 yards and $440 for 6 yards with 4 tonnes included, because dense material would overload a larger bin.
