How the fraction system works

Most Ottawa haulers on these lists price by eye at your door: they judge how much of the truck the pile fills and name a price for that share: an eighth, a quarter, a half, a full load. The fraction is the headline number on each list below, and the price moves in steps.

Trucks differ in size, so a quarter at one firm holds a different volume than a quarter at another. Compare the trucks before the prices.

The four ladders

Share Junk Gods Junk Ninja Take It Away Mighty Mouse
Single or minimum $135 $139 $149 from $175
1/8 $245 $199
1/6 $279 $259
1/4 $365 $329 $309 $265
1/2 $645 $529 $439 $425
3/4 $845 $669 $589 $605
Full $985 $719 $699 $695

Junk Gods and Junk Ninja add tax to these; Mighty Mouse and Take It Away do not say on the page. Junk Gods also prints a one-third tier at $455, which it calls its most popular.

Truck size, in feet and yards

  • Junk Gods: 16 x 8 x 7 ft, 32 cubic yards.
  • Junk Ninja: 12 x 8 x 6 ft.
  • Take It Away: 10 x 8 x 5 ft, maximum capacity 400 cu ft.
  • Mighty Mouse: a 15-yard bin.

Working from the printed numbers, a full Junk Gods truck costs about $31 a cubic yard, Mighty Mouse’s about $46, and Take It Away’s about $47 (400 cu ft is roughly 15 yards). A Junk Ninja truck is about 21 cubic yards, or about $34 a yard. A low sticker price can still cost more per yard. A big truck suits a big job; a small job pays the minimum either way.

What a fraction means in rooms

Junk Gods attaches a typical load to each size. Its 1/8 is a mattress or couch with a small item. The 1/4 is a small room cleanout, couch or mattress with extras. The 1/3 is a full room plus overflow, or a home office. The 1/2 is a garage cleanout or mixed furniture. The 3/4 is two full rooms or a small apartment. The full truck is a full-house or estate cleanout. Treat these as one firm’s guide; other firms draw the lines elsewhere. For job-specific reading, see garage cleanout, basement cleanout and estate cleanout.

What sits outside the ladder

Price lists leave some things out. Item fees apply to mattresses, paint, propane and tires at some firms; the numbers are on junk removal cost in Ottawa and prices by item. Heavy material shifts the bill from volume to weight. Hot tubs, pool tables and gym equipment are listed by Junk Gods as specialty items, and demolition is quoted separately.

Truck or bin

A bin charges for days and weight; a truck charges for the pile and includes the labour. The comparison is on bin rental or junk pickup and bin rental prices.

Reading a written quote

A quote that states the truck size, the fraction, the tax, any minimum, the item fees and the stairs can be compared with another one. A quote that gives only a total cannot. Ask the company to restate it if a line is missing.

Who comes to the door

None of the four ladders above is ours. The request goes to one independent hauler, whose own truck size and own ladder decide the fraction it names after seeing your photos. Ottawa Junk Desk sets no price and sends no crew.

Questions to ask the company

  1. What is the size of your truck, in feet or cubic yards, and what do you call a full load?
  2. Which fraction is my pile, in your view, and why?
  3. Is the quote before or after tax, and is the fuel or disposal charge in it?
  4. If the pile fills a bit more than a quarter, do you round up or charge between steps?
  5. Is there a minimum, and does the online-booking discount, if any, apply?

Have this ready for the call

  • A photo of the whole pile with a car, door or person in the frame for scale
  • A count of bulky pieces: sofas, mattresses, dressers, appliances
  • A guess at how much is heavy material such as tile, brick or soil
  • A note on stairs, lift and the distance from the pile to the driveway
  • Two or three quotes saved in the same form, taxes marked

Questions people ask

Why do two Ottawa firms charge $695 and $985 for a full truck?

The trucks differ. Junk Gods prints a 16 x 8 x 7 ft truck of 32 cubic yards; Mighty Mouse describes a 15-yard load. Worked out from the printed numbers, that is about $31 a yard against about $46. A bigger truck holds more for its price, and the firms may also differ on tax and add-ons.

What does a quarter truck hold?

Junk Gods prints 8 cubic yards for its quarter tier and names a small room cleanout, or a couch or mattress with extras, as typical. Mighty Mouse describes its quarter as a few small items, a mattress or a couple of broken appliances. Sizes differ by firm.

Is there an Ottawa firm that prices a one-eighth load?

Two do. Junk Gods prints a 1/8 truck at $245 and Take It Away at $199. Junk Ninja prints a 1/6 tier at $279 and Take It Away at $259. A smaller step helps when the pile is just over a single item, so ask whether the firm has one.

Do I pay a different price for a heavy pile of the same volume?

Often, yes. Mighty Mouse says dense material such as concrete, brick, tile, drywall or dirt moves pricing from volume to weight, because a full bin of concrete would exceed the vehicle’s weight limits. Junk Gods lists concrete, bricks and masonry as specialty items. Tell the company what is heavy.

How is a discount for online booking handled?

Take It Away prints $20 off for booking online; Junk Gods prints 10% off curbside removals and discounts for seniors, first responders and military. Ask the company that calls you whether a discount applies to your request, since this site cannot promise one.

Can I split one big job into several loads?

Yes, and firms handle it differently. Mighty Mouse says a multi-load estate job is charged per completed load, with no flat contract. Ask whether the second truck is priced on the same ladder, whether it is a separate visit, and what the stairs and carry add at each stop.
