Two ways to clear a load

A roll-off bin is dropped on your driveway. You, your family or your contractor fill it over the rental period, then the company hauls it away. You pay for the bin, the days, and the weight.

Full-service pickup is a truck and a crew. They carry everything out of the house, load it and leave. You pay for the share of the truck the load fills, with the labour inside the price.

What each costs in Ottawa

Bin prices from two Ottawa companies, both before HST (more sizes on bin rental prices):

Bin Price Included Over the limit
9-yard, 9 × 7 × 4 ft $440 + 17% charge 1 tonne, 6 days $150/tonne, $20/day
14-yard, 11 × 8 × 4.5 ft $485 + 17% charge 1.5 tonnes, 6 days $150/tonne, $20/day
20-yard, 11 × 8 × 6 ft $540 + 17% charge 2 tonnes, 6 days $150/tonne, $20/day
14-yard, 12 × 8 × 5 ft (second company) $300 for 1 week, $329 for 2 dump fee extra $145/ton, $12/day after 2 weeks

Worked example, a 14-yard bin holding 1.5 tonnes: the first company comes to about $567 before HST ($485 plus 17%). The second charges $300 plus $145 for each ton the load weighs, so ask whether its ton is metric before comparing.

Pickup prices on Ottawa lists run by the share of a truck (see prices by truckload and the full cost guide). One firm charges $269 for a fifth and $699 for a full load. Another lists $265 for a quarter and $695 for a full load. A third gives $700–900 as its full-load range. Truck sizes differ, so ask how much a full load holds.

Which fits which job

A bin fits when:

  • the job runs over several days, like a basement or bathroom tear-out (renovation debris),
  • the material is heavy and dense: drywall, tile, plaster, shingles,
  • someone is on site to load it, and the driveway can hold an 11 × 8 ft box plus the truck to set it down.

A pickup fits when:

  • the load is furniture, mattresses and boxes that have to come out of the house,
  • the job is done in one visit, before a closing or a move-out,
  • the load holds appliances (fridge and freezer removal); one Ottawa bin company lists Freon among the things it refuses,
  • there is nowhere to put a bin: a condo, a short townhouse driveway, a busy street.

A bin on the driveway, a bin on the road

The City’s Temporary Construction-related Encroachment permit covers City property: the road, the boulevard, the sidewalk and public laneways. A roll-off bin there needs the permit. A bin set fully on your private driveway sits outside it, so measure before the truck comes and keep the bin off the boulevard.

On the road, the 2026 fees are $101 for a simple permit (10 working days or less) plus road rental at $2.02 per square metre a day, with a $41 daily minimum. An 11 × 8 ft bin covers about 8 m², so the minimum applies: six days on the street comes to $101 plus $246. The City needs at least 10 business days to issue the permit.

Condo and townhouse complexes set their own bin rules. Ask the property manager before you book.

What neither one takes

The City landfill refuses asbestos, liquids and hazardous waste (see items haulers cannot take and what haulers take). Both bin companies above refuse paint, propane and other hazardous material. Asbestos gets its own sealed route: one of them rents a covered 20-yard bin for it, with the price and tonnage on the bin prices page. Name anything unusual in the request.

Who you are dealing with

Write “bin”, “pickup” or “not sure” in the request. One independent company gets it, phones to talk through the job and the driveway, then either drops a bin or sends a crew at the price it quotes. Ottawa Junk Desk owns neither the bins nor the trucks.

Questions to ask the company

  1. How many tonnes are included, and what does each tonne over cost?
  2. How many days are included, and what does each extra day cost?
  3. Is there a fuel or environmental charge on top of the rental price?
  4. If the bin has to sit on the road, do you apply for the City permit or do I?
  5. Which materials do you refuse in the bin?

Have this ready for the call

  • Measure the driveway: length, width, and any slope or overhead wires.
  • Check where your property ends; the boulevard by the street is City property.
  • Estimate the material: drywall sheets, flooring area, bags of plaster.
  • List what a bin company refuses: appliances with refrigerant, paint, propane, oil.
  • For a condo or a townhouse complex, ask the property manager about bins on site.

Questions people ask

Is a bin cheaper than a junk pickup?

For heavy debris filled over several days, often yes: a 14-yard bin lists at $485 plus a 17% charge with 1.5 tonnes in, or $300 plus $145 a ton at a second company. For furniture that has to be carried out of the house, a pickup crew does the carrying, and its full truck lists at $695–699.

Do I need a permit for a bin in Ottawa?

Only if it leaves your property. On the road, the boulevard or a public lane, the bin falls under the City’s Temporary Construction-related Encroachment permit, which in 2026 costs $101 for a simple one plus a daily road charge with a $41 floor. Apply ten business days or more before the drop.

What happens if the bin is heavier than the price includes?

Bin companies charge for the extra weight. On two Ottawa lists that is $145 a ton or $150 a tonne, prorated. Shingles, concrete, tile and plaster add up fast, so ask what weight comes with the price.

Can I put an old fridge in the bin?

One Ottawa bin company lists Freon among the things it refuses. Appliances with refrigerant need the refrigerant taken out first, and the City does not collect appliances at the curb. Book the fridge as an appliance pickup.

Can I get both: a bin and a crew?

Write both in your request. Some Ottawa haulers run bins and pickup trucks, and the company that calls can price either or both.
