Where Stittsville sits

Stittsville lies about 20 km west of downtown Ottawa, directly south-west of Kanata and next to Richmond. Before the 2001 merger it belonged to Goulbourn Township. The urban part of the community matches Stittsville Ward, which counted 40,889 residents in 2021.

The old Carp Road and Hazeldean Road corner is Old Stittsville, and Stittsville Main Street runs through it. Write the road nearest you in the request, since it sets the route.

A village that grew around its old core

The village was founded in 1854, when the first post office opened and Jackson Stitt became postmaster. A fire in 1870 destroyed most of the buildings, and the village rebuilt around the new railway. Passenger trains stopped in January 1990; the old rail bed along Abbott Street East now carries the Trans Canada Trail.

Some of the older buildings still stand. The Bradley barn at 590 Hazeldean Road was built in 1873, and Green’s Hotel at 1510 Stittsville Main Street is believed to date from 1890 or 1894. Around this core sit newer subdivisions with names like Fairwinds, Jackson Trails, Granite Ridge and Forest Creek.

That mix matters for a junk job. A newer subdivision house produces furniture, garage items and boxes. An older lot at the village edge, or one with a barn, brings sheds, fence, scrap wood and brush. The Kanata page covers the nearby suburb with its own housing mix.

The yard is the job

Stittsville properties have more yard than most of the inner city. After a storm or a spring cleanup, the pile includes branches, a collapsed fence, an old swing set, deck boards, a rusted barbecue. Those items split into two groups.

  • Brush and leaf waste. The City collects leaf and yard waste weekly with green bin material. A large heap of branches does not fit that, and the City landfill charges $141.90 per tonne above 100 kg for branches under 20 cm.
  • Trees, stumps, structures. Trunks over 20 cm and stumps cost $314 per tonne at the landfill. A shed or deck is debris that a hauler loads and prices by truck fraction. See yard waste removal and shed and deck removal.

Disposal sites

The City lists four private sites besides its own landfill. Two are near Stittsville: Tomlinson Waste Recovery Centre at 106 Westhunt Drive in Carp, and Waste Management’s West Carleton Environmental Centre at 2301 Carp Road. The City asks residents to call a site before going, to confirm what it accepts and its rates. The company that picks up your load chooses where it goes.

What drives the price

Every Ottawa list we opened sells truck space. One runs from $129 for a minimum to $699 for a full truck, with three-fifths at $579. Another puts a half truck at $425 and a full one at $695, and a third lists $300–450 for a half. Stairs, a long carry from a deep lot or soft ground can add labour. A garage cleanout plus yard debris often fills a full truck.

Spring and fall

Snow cover hides the yard in winter, and the first thaw reveals what winter broke. Fall brings fence and deck tear-outs before freeze-up. Ask the company how its calendar looks around those weeks.

Who you are dealing with

Stittsville requests go to one independent company that covers the Carp and Hazeldean area. It phones you, walks through the yard photos with you and names the price, and its people do the loading. Ottawa Junk Desk is the switchboard in between.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is my Stittsville street, or my rural-edge lot, inside your regular area at your regular prices?
  2. I have a shed, a fence section and brush. Do you price those apart from household items?
  3. How far can the crew carry from the back of a deep lot to the truck?
  4. Can the pickup be split into two visits, one for the house and one for the yard?
  5. Where does the wood and metal go after the pickup?

Have this ready for the call

  • Your street or the nearest of Carp Road, Hazeldean Road or Main Street.
  • A walk of the whole lot with photos: shed, fence, brush pile, deck, garage.
  • The size of the branches and whether any trunks are over 20 cm across.
  • Gate width, a path for a truck onto the lot, and any soft ground or slope.
  • A note on items you want to keep so the crew does not load them.

Questions people ask

Does the City collect yard waste from Stittsville homes?

Leaf and yard waste rides with the green bin every week. A fallen tree, a heap of branches or a shed is far beyond that program, so it becomes a hauler’s load, and the landfill weighs it in at $141.90 a tonne for brush past the first 100 kg in 2026.

My Stittsville lot is large. Does the hauler charge by distance carried?

Published Ottawa price lists are by truck fraction, and one firm says access to upper floors or tight spaces can add labour time. A long carry from a deep lot is similar, so photograph the route to the truck and ask the company how it counts it.

Which landfill is closest to Stittsville?

The City lists private sites at 106 Westhunt Drive in Carp and 2301 Carp Road, plus its own Trail Road landfill. Hours, accepted materials and rates differ, and the City tells residents to phone ahead. A hauler decides where your load goes.

Can a hauler take wood from an old barn or outbuilding?

The hauler prices demolition-type wood as debris, by truck fraction. Ask whether the structure is still standing, because taking it down is a separate job from loading the pieces. The page on shed and deck removal covers that.

Do I get a free pickup because I run a farm?

The Ottawa hauler lists we read show no farm discount. The City landfill waives its fee for farm waste from registered farms, as its by-law defines them. Residents with a hobby property pay the standard rates.
