In short

  • Gloucester was a city from 1981 until 2001 and held about 150,012 people in 2021, east and south-east of the inner city.
  • Leitrim–Findlay Creek went from about 1,300 people in 2006 to over 14,000 by 2021, so most of its houses are young.
  • Stoves, fridges and freezers are refused at the curb, and a cooling unit needs its refrigerant pulled and a tag before any landfill accepts it.
  • East or west, Ottawa price lists start at $129–175 and top out at $695–699 for a full box.

The east side of Ottawa

Surveyed in 1792 as Township B, Gloucester became a township in 1850 and a city in 1981, then folded into Ottawa in 2001. Its first settler, Braddish Billings, cleared land at what is now Billings Bridge.

Geography stretches far. Shopping centres at Billings Bridge, South Keys and Place d’Orléans anchor it, and the township’s places of interest include the Canada Science and Technology Museum and Mer Bleue Bog. For a hauler that spread decides the route, so give a postal code.

Neighbourhoods old and new

Wikipedia’s neighbourhood table for Gloucester shows two different patterns.

  • Settled neighbourhoods: Beacon Hill North (9,342 residents in 2021), Blackburn Hamlet (8,173), Blossom Park (14,621), Pineview (6,652) and Cyrville–Carson Grove (9,278) have held steady or grown slowly since 2006. Their homes are decades old, with garages and basements that fill up. Convent Glen and Chapel Hill also sit in this table, and the Orléans page covers that end in more detail.
  • Growing neighbourhoods: Leitrim–Findlay Creek counted 1,333 people in 2006 and 14,089 in 2021; Riverside South nearly doubled over the same years, to 12,582. A lot of these homes are young, and the junk is move-in leftovers.
  • Rural Gloucester: 11,125 residents in 2021, with larger lots, sheds and barns.

Appliances in the east end

Settled neighbourhoods with older basements send a steady stream of appliance requests. On its special items page the City rules out curbside pickup for stoves, fridges and freezers, and it requires any fridge, freezer or air conditioner to have the refrigerant drawn off and a technician’s tag attached before a landfill site will take it. Ottawa haulers handle this in different ways. One lists $30–50 for a Freon appliance, while another lists no surcharge for fridges. The appliance removal page explains the rules, and fridge and freezer removal takes the single-unit case.

Move-outs and rentals

A lease that ends, or a sale that closes, leaves mattresses, chairs and boxes behind, and the City’s three-item limit caps what the curb can take. See move-out cleanout for the timing, and mattress disposal for the item most often left behind.

Disposal and permits

The City lists Waste Connections at 3354 Navan Road as a private site, and notes it does not take wet waste such as food. The City asks residents to phone before going. A roll-off bin in the roadway or a public laneway needs a Temporary Construction-related Encroachment permit; a bin entirely on private land does not. A simple permit covers an encroachment of 10 working days or less.

Prices

Ottawa lists run by the fraction of a truck. A quarter truck is $150–250 on one list and $265 on another. A full truck is $695 or $699. A minimum charge is $129 on one list and starts at $175 on another. Ask the company whether the price includes tax, since one list adds it.

Who you are dealing with

An east-end request is handed to one independent hauler that covers the east end. The call, the quote and the crew all come from that company; Ottawa Junk Desk passes on the details and steps out. If a rural address is outside its range, it says so on the call.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Blossom Park and Findlay Creek are a long way apart. Do both get the same rate from you?
  2. I live in a rural part of Gloucester. Is the drive part of the quote?
  3. My fridge and freezer come out in the same trip. Is the refrigerant handled and priced?
  4. Can the crew come after my move-out date but before the new owners get keys?
  5. What is the charge if the load turns out bigger than the photos?

Have this ready for the call

  • Your postal code and neighbourhood, for example Blackburn Hamlet, Blossom Park, Beacon Hill or Findlay Creek.
  • A list of appliances with make and size, and whether each still holds refrigerant.
  • Photos of the full load in place, with doors open and lights on.
  • A date window and the key or lockbox arrangement for an empty or rented unit.
  • Where the truck stops: driveway, visitor lot, laneway or road shoulder.

Questions people ask

How big is Gloucester, and does my address count?

Gloucester covers the east and south-east of Ottawa from near Billings Bridge to Leitrim, Riverside South and rural land beyond the Greenbelt. Wikipedia lists neighbourhoods such as Beacon Hill, Pineview, Cyrville, Blossom Park and Blackburn Hamlet. Give a postal code and the company will say whether it covers you.

My home in Findlay Creek is new. Why would I have junk?

A neighbourhood that grew more than tenfold in fifteen years sees a stream of moves, new furniture and finished basements. The leftovers are old sofas, mattresses, packaging and builder offcuts. Those split into furniture, which a hauler prices by truck fraction, and building waste, which prices as debris.

Where does a hauler take the load in the east end?

The City lists Waste Connections at 3354 Navan Road among private sites, and it does not accept wet waste such as food. The City also runs the Trail Road landfill. The company that does your job chooses the site, so ask only if you need to know where reusable pieces go.

Can a landlord or property manager book the pickup for a unit?

Yes, if the person booking can give access. Name the unit, floor, lift or stairs, and entry arrangement in the request. A hauler arriving without a key or code loses time, and time is what drives a price when a job is carried by hand.

Is a dumpster easier for a large east-end house clear-out?

A bin in the roadway or a public laneway needs a City encroachment permit, and a bin on your driveway does not. For a house with stairs and many rooms, a crew carrying items out may suit better. The bin or pickup guide lays out the trade-offs.
