What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Can someone on your crew speak French with me on the day?
  2. Q2How many loads do you expect for the whole house, and what is the price per load?
  3. Q3Do you take the basement freezer and the old washer and dryer on the same trip?
  4. Q4Can you set aside furniture in good shape for donation?
  5. Q5Is my street in Orléans inside your regular area at your regular prices?

Before the visit

  • Walk the house room by room and note what goes: basement, garage, shed, attic.
  • Photos of each room with the pile in it.
  • Appliances on the list, with which ones hold refrigerant: fridge, freezer, air conditioner.
  • Where the truck can back up: driveway, street, shared lot for a row townhome.
  • Say in the request if you want the call in French.

Where Orléans sits

Orléans runs along the Ottawa River in the city’s east end, about 16 km from downtown. Highway 174 links it to central Ottawa, and improvements to the 174 in the 1970s are part of why the suburb grew. Inside Orléans, St. Joseph Boulevard is the old main street and Innes Road, Tenth Line Road and Trim Road carry the rest. Name the main road nearest you in the work order, with your postal code.

The City lists a private disposal site on Navan Road alongside its own landfill on Trail Road in the south end. Which one a hauler uses is its own business.

Family houses, full basements

Orléans grew from the late 1960s. Queenswood Heights came first, Convent Glen and Orléans Woods went up in the 1970s on farmland, and Chapel Hill and Fallingbrook followed in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly as single-family streets. Avalon, Notting Gate and Cardinal Creek extended the suburb east from the 2000s.

More than half the homes are single-detached houses, about 30% are row houses, and about 85% of households own their home. A family house with a basement, a garage and a shed is a bigger job than an apartment:

  • Ask for the number of loads, and the price for each.
  • Walk the basement first. Old freezers, bar fridges and window air conditioners hold refrigerant, and the City does not collect appliances at the curb.
  • Row townhomes: tell the company where the truck can stop: your driveway, the street or a shared lot.

A house clear-out with a deadline

A sale, an estate or a move into a smaller place usually comes with a date. Put everything in one work order: what stays with the family, what can be donated, what goes. Set the date of the closing or the handover in the first line. The company that calls can plan one visit or several.

In French or English

About a third of Orléans residents give French as their mother tongue. If you want the call or the crew in French, write it in the work order. The company sees the note before it calls.

Questions

01Can I get service in French in Orléans?

Write it in the work order. About a third of Orléans residents give French as their mother tongue, and the company that receives your request sees the note and can tell you on the call who will come.

02We are clearing out a family house. How is that priced?

By the truck. Two Ottawa firms list a full truck at $695 and $699, and a third gives $700–900. A full house can fill more than one, so ask how many loads the company expects.

03Will the City take the old freezer from the basement?

The City does not collect appliances at the curb, freezers included, and the refrigerant has to be removed before disposal. One Ottawa hauler lists $30–50 for an appliance with refrigerant. Put it in the same request as the rest.

04Does the drive out to Orléans add to the price?

The Ottawa price lists we read show one price for the city. A firm may have its own policy for distance, so ask on the call.

05Can usable furniture go to a charity?

Ask the company that calls. Some Ottawa haulers sort usable pieces for donation, and the City asks residents to think about reuse first for items such as sofas.
